Guided & Interactive Walks on the Bittern & Wherry Lines

Our Famous Guided Walks 2016 - June 2017
Step out on Sundays!

These walks are led by volunteer leaders. They are FREE to rail ticket holders; those arriving by car will be asked to pay a £5 fee to the leader.

Bring your own refreshments, as not all walks reach a pub or cafe at lunchtime. Due to train times, walks are designed for those coming from Norwich. People coming from elsewhere are of course welcome, but do check train times carefully! We aim to be back in Norwich before 17.00. The distances given are approximate.

Whilst every effort is made to ensure the programme is as advertised, the Partnerships cannot accept responsibility for any changes or cancellations. If you are in any doubt as to whether the walk is going ahead (due to exceptionally bad weather, perhaps), please ring Natural Surroundings on 01263 711 091. Whilst the leaders take every care before and during the walks, all participation is at the walker's own risk.

Dogs are welcome; there is no charge for dogs on the train. However, we respectfully ask that they are kept on a short lead at all times, as the walks go through fields with livestock and nature reserves with feeding and nesting birds. Please help to maintain the Bittern and Wherry Lines' good image with the people who live and work in the countryside.

If you are interested in becoming a walk leader, please talk to the leader of the walk you are on, as we are always seeking to gain new expertise.

PLEASE NOTE THAT NOT ALL WALKS START AND FINISH AT THE SAME STATION.

Railway Rambles from the Bittern and Wherry Lines

The smaller stations on the Bittern and Wherry Lines lend themselves to getting out into the countryside for pleasure, relaxation and health. Bus links, especially the Coasthopper, extend opportunities for walking from the train. Ordnance Survey Explorer map OL40 covers the whole of the Wherry Lines, and the Bittern Line as far as North Walsham. Map 252 covers the rest, and maps 251 and 250 extend along the north coast. These maps are ideal for walkers and cyclists.

As well as its programme of guided walks, the Bittern and Wherry Lines have produced books of walks to follow from stations. Copies are available from Community Rail Norfolk, c/o Broadland District Council, Thorpe Lodge, 1 Yarmouth Road, Norwich NR7 0DU. Please send a cheque for £2.50 per book (including postage & packing), made out to Community Rail Norfolk. (They cannot be collected from Broadland District Council's offices.)
